数値の表現

本サイトはキャリアに関する原著を読むのが目標ですが、参考としている技術英語では数値を表す機会が多いので少し道草させていただきます。最初に割合に関する表現、次に大きさに関する表現について書いてみました。

数値の割合

割合を意味する語としては、rate, ratio, proportion などあります。それぞれ使い方は異なるので取り上げてみました。

①The furnance burns fuel at the rate of three tons per hours.
比較する単位（重さと時間）が異なる

②The disease appears at the ratio of one to a thousand persons.
比較する単位（人数同志）が同じ

表にまとめると、

	rate	ratio
意味	ある基準に対する割合	２つ以上のものの割合（比率）
一般的形式	at a [the] rate of …	in a [the] ratio of … ~
備考		proportionと代替可

①は rate を省略して次のように書く場合もある。

炉の特性に着目
The furnance consumes three tons of fuel per hour.
消費量に着目して
Three tons of fuel is consumed per hour in the furnance.

輪読会の”Career Construction Counseling Manual”から探すと
At work, he had difficulty saying no to requests, causing him to work 10-15 hours per week more than required.
あまり数字を扱うところは無いようです。

簡単なテスト・・・
問題1　at the ( ) of 50 yen a kilogram
問題2　in the ( ) of three to one

問題1 rate 、問題2 ratio ( proportional)

数値の大きさ

ここでは縦、横、深さなどのを用いる場合は、主に形容詞・副詞の場合は long, wide, deep 、名刺の場合は length, width, deep を用いる。

箱の大きさを表すには
①This box is 20 cm long, 15cm wide, and 10 cm deep.
②This box has a length of 20 cm, a width of 15cm, and a depth of 10 cm.
③This box measures(is) 20 cm in length, 15 cm in width, and 10 cm in width.

ある大きさの箱を書くには
①a box (which is) 20 cm long, 15cm wide, and 10 cm deep.
②a box with a length of 20 cm, a width of 15cm, and a depth of 10 cm.
③a box measuring 20 cm in length, 15 cm in width, and 10 cm in width.

他に、トンネルや川の場合
a tunnel running 20 m deep and 5 km long.
